Road Test: Uniden iGo Cam 800
A "BLACK box" for your car - a video camera that can provide evidence of fault in the event of a crash.
WHAT is it?
It's a "black box" for your car - a video camera that can provide evidence of fault in the event of a crash.
How does it work?
It mounts on your windscreen and has two swivelling cameras, to cover any angles you choose. You start to record when you begin your trip, and it saves to a Micro SD card.
Is it any good?
The video is sharp and bright. The functions are not as user-friendly as they should be, though, and the battery life is only 35 minutes, so most of the time you'll have it plugged into the cigarette lighter socket via a power cord; that's a pain.
Do you really need one?
Say you get rear-ended by a hoon in broad daylight - stop snickering at the back - and he claims you backed into him. Well, he's bang to rights if you've filmed it.
So the iGo Cam 800 is essentially the sword of truth with which you battle the scourge of automotive insurance injustice?
Yes, exactly. Think of yourself as a superhero called Incontrovertible Footage Man. Wear a cape and a pair of red spandex undies over your work trousers, if you like. Your call.
But hang on ... what if you have an accident and it's your fault?
