Road Test: Moleskine Smart Writing Set

It looks like a classic Moleskine. But this notebook cleverly bridges the analogue and digital worlds.

What is it? A 2022 version of the Moleskine notebook that bridges the analogue and digital worlds.

How so? It looks like a classic Moleskine – smart black cover with rounded edges; 176 pages of lovely paper – and comes with a pen that looks and writes just like a regular ink pen. But in fact, this is a Smart Notebook and a Smart Pen, and they work in tandem with the Moleskin Notes app on your digital device.

Go on… Whatever you write or sketch in the notebook is replicated in real time on your device. You can use the app to convert handwriting into digital text, or to add colour to drawings. And being in digital form, you can edit, organise and share your work – while still retaining the ink/paper original in the notebook.

How does it work? The paper is impregnated with something called Ncode (it’s barely visible) that the pen picks up. How clever is that?

Available online, around $440
