Road Test: Jura Giga 6

This award-winning coffee machine costs $6500 but will leave you feeling like you’ve just been to 7-Eleven.

What is it? A coffee machine that costs six and a half grand!

Why so expensive? Because it’s made in Switzerland by chin-stroking types in white lab coats, and is fully automated; via the touch-screen you can customise everything from the grind of the beans to the temperature of the milk froth. It’ll even dispense two specialty coffees simultaneously.

Sounds impressive. Well, the people at the Good Design Awards obviously thought so; they gave it a gong. Me? I didn’t like it at all.

Why not? For starters, because it took me and the missus seven minutes to work out how to even turn the bloody thing on. Then, all the palaver of communicating choices to a robot – that just doesn’t feel luxe to me; that feels like the experience of using a 7-Eleven coffee machine.

Say something nice! The coffee’s decent, and the unit looks nice. For 6.5k, though, I’d want it in solid gold.
