Road Test: Havaianas Market Zip Top: Road Test
Casual footwear that you can adjust according to the weather and the season. But are these innovative new pluggers worth the hefty pricetag?
What is it? Great news for people with indecisive feet! It’s a pair of convertible thongs.
Please explain. Well, they look like quilted slides, right? But look closely and you’ll see a zip running around the edge of each shoe. Undo that and voila! The quilted top comes off to reveal open-air yellow/black Havaianas.
You mean regular thongs? Not quite. The sole on the heel end is 3cm high, which feels a bit Elton, the straps are extra-wide, and overall they’re chunkier than your regular pluggers. They’re described as “featherlight”, which isn’t strictly correct, unless they’re talking about the feathers on the arse end of a waterlogged ostrich.
Smart idea, though. It’s a stroke of genius – casual footwear that you can adjust according to the weather and the season. But I’m struggling to think what you’re supposed to do with the quilted uppers if you remove them at the beach.
Stuff ’em down your boardshorts, maybe? Perish the thought.
