Road Test: GoCube Edge
The Rubik’s cube has been reimagined for the digital age.
What is it? A Rubik’s cube reimagined for the digital age. It connects to an app on your phone, and syncs to a virtual copy of the cube that appears on your screen.
Then what? The app tracks the progress of your skills and your cubing stats, sets you challenges, lets you battle against friends, and connects you to a global leaderboard.
Hmmm. Sounds a bit geeky. Well, what attracted me was the promise that it would teach a beginner how to solve the cube in only an hour, with tutorials on “algorithms” (cuberspeak for special sequences of moves), tips and prompts.
So did you solve it in an hour? Hell no. The interface isn’t exactly user-friendly for a 50-something, and the cube has an annoying habit of glitching and requiring recalibration with the app. But if you’re a young, accomplished cuber looking for new challenges, it’s worth a look.
