Road Test: Gasmate CH100

With all the moans of pleasure coming from your tent, who knows what your camping neighbours will think.

What is it? A godsend for winter campers. It’s a gas heater for your tent!

Sounds lethal already. Well, the unit – it’s the size of a slab of beer, and weighs 8.6kg – sits outside your tent, so there’s no worries about carbon monoxide; warm air is forced through 1.6m of flexible ducting that you feed through the tent door. Sensors switch off the machine if it falls over or if the flame goes out.

What does it run on? Propane gas canisters provide the flame for heating; a rechargeable battery inside the unit powers the fan.

The downside: All the other campers will think you’re a wuss.

The upside: Come to think of it, with all the moans of pleasure coming from your tent, who knows what they’ll think. Try inserting the end of the ducting into your sleeping bag! It’s like a Dutch oven, only without all the dry retching.
