WHAT is it?

The perfect gift for Mother's Day - "A great kit for the handy woman", according to retailer Masters Home Improvement.

You'd be in so much trouble.
But why? Flowers, chocolates and perfume are cliched and predictable. Even if your mum does hate this gift - even if she clamps the long-nose pliers onto your septum and marches you down to the florists like a farmer with a bull, and forces you to buy her the entire stock by way of recompense - at least you tried to be original. Actually, on second thoughts, you're right, it's a terrible idea for Mother's Day.

So who else might like it?
Well, plenty of women are better at DIY than their blokes. But let's drop the sexist assumption that hot-pink is only for girls. Maybe you're a fashion-forward tradie looking for a bold, colour-blocking tool set to really pop that fluoro-vest/white-hard-hat ensemble. Let the other guys whistle!

What's in the kit?
Linesman pliers, long-nose pliers, adjustable wrench, five-piece screwdriver set, six-in-one screwdriver, torpedo level, claw hammer, tape measure and utility knife.

What's the quality like?
It's not exactly Bosch, but it's all right. What do you expect for 30 bucks?

Price: $30, masters.com.au
