Lula review: A ‘warm hug’ for your eyes

This self-warming, scented mask comes in Jasmine, Rose or Grapefruit varieties. But what about a comforting scent for blokes, too?

She hasn’t quite got the hang of it. It’s for your eyes, not your forehead.
She hasn’t quite got the hang of it. It’s for your eyes, not your forehead.

WHAT IS IT? “A warm hug for your eyes and mind,” according to the two Brisbane sisters who created Lula. It’s “Australia’s first self-warming eye mask”!

SELF-WARMING? Yes. Each disposable eye-mask contains iron powder, water and salt; when the eye-mask is removed from its sealed pouch, the iron oxidises – rusts, in other words – and gives off heat. It’s how disposable hand warmers work, too.

HOW LONG DOES THE HEAT LAST? About 20 minutes – just long enough for a quick relaxation session, to take the edge off a headache, or to drift off to sleep.

CAN YOU REHEAT IT AFTERWARDS IN THE MICROWAVE? No! It’s full of iron powder, remember. (Microwaving it would be spectacular, though.) Lula recommends that you compost each eye-mask after use (yeah, right).

ANYTHING ELSE? Yes, they’re available either unscented, or scented with Jasmine, Rose or Grapefruit, which are all rather feminine smells. What about a comforting scent for the blokes, too, Lula? I’m thinking Damp Labrador, or Bunnings Snag.

$29.99 (box of five), lulaeyemask.com.au
