What is it?

It’s either a dazzling sci-fi vision of the future of personal transport, or a neat way to knock out all of your front teeth, depending on how you look at it.

How so? This self-balancing scooter offers nothing to hold on to; you stand on the deck between the two wheels and control it with bodily movements. Lean forward to go (the further you lean, the faster you go) and shift your weight left or right to turn. A gyroscope helps keep you in balance.

Vital stats: Top speed: 12km/h; range: 20km; weight: 12kg.

Verdict: It’s unnerving at first, then fun – at least until you stack it. It’s certainly cooler and cleverer than its old-school rival, the Segway. (Pub trivia: the boss of Segway died when he reversed one of his machines off a cliff! True that.)
