HOLY MOLY! THAT IS A MONSTER OF AN EGG. Yup. It weighs 1.5kg, and is equivalent to 24 chicken eggs. I feel a bit sorry for the lady ostrich, to be frank. Imagine squeezing out this bum-nut!

UUURGH! CAN WE PLEASE NOT TALK ABOUT OSTRICH PRIVATE PARTS? Righto. The egg is from Hastings Ostrich Farms on Victoria’s Surf Coast; they breed the birds, manage a flock of 3000, and sell livestock, eggs, leather, hides and meat.

HOW DO YOU COOK IT? It would take an hour and a half to hard-boil, we’re told. Scrambled egg would be a good choice but we opted instead to make The Biggest Fried Egg Ever, which took half an hour to cook and was a bit of fun for all the family – especially for Rufus the labrador, who got the leftovers.

Taste testing an ostrich egg

WHAT DID IT LOOK AND TASTE LIKE? A 30cm-wide fried egg is pretty confronting, visually – but it tasted just like a hen’s egg.

ANYTHING ELSE? Yes, Hastings Ostrich Farms will even sell you a “retiree” ostrich as a pet. Just imagine strolling around Toorak or Bondi with one on a lead!
