Driveway accidents

ONE of the most harrowing interviews I have ever done was with a mother on Queensland's Sunshine Coast who ran over her toddler in the driveway of her home.

It was nearly 20 years ago, but to this day I recall the look of utter despair on her face as she went over every tiny detail leading up to that fateful moment.

And of course it was just a moment, because that's all it takes for a toddler to dart behind a moving car.

Journalist Kate Legge's story about this very subject is compelling reading for every parent.

Driveway accidents are more common than you'd think; in Queensland alone it's estimated that three children every week are hit by cars.

There's no easy solution other than vigilance - but in this busy world there aren't many parents who can claim never to have had a moment's inattention at the wheel.
