DANGER and deprivation are not words usually associated with a travel correspondent's life - luxury and indulgence more readily spring to mind.

But in the interests of bringing you the broadest range of experiences for today's special Australian travel issue, journalist Mark Whittaker went beyond the call of duty.

With his golf clubs on his back he set off to the Nullarbor to play the world's longest golf course. And just to add a twist to the adventure, he decided to hitchhike the 1365km course.

It's been many years since I've seen anyone hitchhiking - the spectre of Ivan Milat still looms large - so thank you to the drivers who helped deliver Mark home in one piece.
