MANY readers expected that our November 24 cover image of gun enthusiast and NSW MP Robert Borsak in his room full of dead animals would be greeted with howls of protest.

It's true, I did expect hate mail, but I am pleased that the avalanche of letters we received about the rising influence of the gun lobby were measured and sensible. You will find a selection on the next page. Meanwhile, columnist Nikki Gemmell was shocked at the response to what we thought was a heartwarming piece about the newest member of her family, a puppy. Her crime? She bought the dog from a pet shop. Clearly, many readers disapprove of pet shops and they're entitled to their view. But some of the letters Nikki received were abusive, cowardly and threatening. A follow-up column awaits.
