Blaze Laserlight

What is it? “The safest bike light on the road,” according to its British makers. As well as producing regular illumination from an LED, it contains a laser that projects a green image of a bicycle onto the ground six metres in front of the rider.

Why? To increase your “footprint” on the road, and to alert drivers waiting at junctions of your approach. Most serious accidents occur when a driver pulls out in front of you; with this, they’ll think, “What the hell is that?” and look again. The laser image is visible from any angle, unlike a regular light.

Vital statistics: It’s big (11.5cm long, 200g), waterproof and USB-rechargeable. Build quality is excellent, as per the price.

Anything else? It’s a great conversation starter at traffic lights. But is it a conversation you really want, after a while?
