Apple Vision Pro: Road Test

It looks like you’re wearing a scuba diving mask - but get past that and the Apple Vision Pro is a truly astonishing piece of technology.

Impressive: the Apple Vision Pro
Impressive: the Apple Vision Pro

ARE YOU WEARING AN INDOOR SCUBA MASK? No, you luddite, this is the Apple Vision Pro, the single most overwhelming, emotional, alarmingly dystopian and revelatory piece of technology it has ever been my brain’s challenge to interpret.

SO, IT’S A VERY EXPENSIVE IPAD STRAPPED TO YOUR HEAD? No, it is the future of everything. Home entertainment, computing, a device that can make flying long-haul economy bearable. The Vision Pro delivers fully immersive cinema-like media experiences and so much more, like spatial video, which turns your memories into 3D (deeply) moving moments that will reinvent the way we look back on our lives.

YOU WERE IMPRESSED, THEN? I was equal parts blown away – the 3D video they’ve made to show off the goggles is too startlingly real, and joyful, to explain in words – and horrified. The problem is that it’s so good in Vision Pro world that people won’t want to come out.

WHAT YOU’LL SAY: Forget “get off your phone”, the next generation’s parental catchcry will be “get that thing off your face”.
