Airwheel SE3S: Road Test

This electric ride-on suitcase has a top speed of 13km/h. You’ll be a menace at the airport, of course - but who’ll stop you?

WHAT IS IT? An electric ride-on suitcase.

OOH, THAT SOUNDS LIKE FUN. I’ll say. With the flick of a switch the case mutates like a Transformer into a three-wheeled scooter, complete with handlebars and footpegs over the front wheel.

SO YOU’LL LOOK LIKE DENNIS HOPPER IN EASY RIDER?You’ll look more like Mr Bean, actually. But never mind: it’ll hit a spirited 13km/h on smooth flat ground. You control the speed via little toggles on the handlebars: your right thumb operates the throttle, and your left thumb the brake.

VITAL STATISTICS: It’s a 20-litre, hard-bodied case, and the lithium battery has a 73Wh capacity, so it’s fine as carry-on luggage on most flights. Maximum rider weight is 110kg (I would love to see that) and the claimed range is 10km. It comes in three colours: pink, black and silver.

VERDICT: “No more pulling luggage – just ride!” say the Airwheel people. You’ll be a menace at the airport, of course, but who’s going to stop you? Unless you get into a hilarious low-speed chase with airport staff in one of those little beeping buggies.
