Billions of mourners across the globe have tuned in to watch as Queen Elizabeth II is laid to rest, marking the end to 10 days of grieving of the late Monarch's monumental reign.

London has been flooded by about 2 million people hoping to catch a glance at the coffin, while 4.2 billion are expected to tune into broadcasts as the world says a final goodbye to the Queen.

The funeral is being performed at Westminster Abbey, where the Queen married her husband, Philip, and was crowned in 1953. It is the first state funeral since Winston Churchill's in 1965.

The ceremony is expected to cost over AU$9m, but is not the most expensive in history. The Queen Mother's funeral cost $9.2m in 2001, and Princess Diana's funeral in 1997 cost $8.5m.

The Queen will be buried next to Prince Philip in the King George VI memorial chapel of St George, named after her father.
