Exclusive data reveals just how many content creators are making money from social media, as experts attempt to quantify the unbelievable reach of influencers.

More than half of Australian influencers are now monetising their content, with fresh data revealing the rapid expansion of the creator economy over the part year, and the increased opportunities for young people to make money online.

The Adobe Future of Creativity study, provided exclusively to The Oz, revealed 48% of Australian creators monetise their content, out of which 79% of creators just started monetising content in the past year.

With the global creator economy growing by 165 million people over the past two year, and poised for further growth, Michael Stoddart, director of digital media enterprise at Adobe, said it was “a great time to be a creator.”

“With the rapid expansion of the creator economy, we can only expect further expansion as more Gen Z creators turn to this industry to earn money,” he said.

“Australia is a huge contributor to (the global) progress as we have added 3 million creators since 2020, which is an exceptional 48% increase.

“Corroborating the exponential rise of the creator economy in Australia, the Future of Creativity study says around 30% of Australian creators are now motivated to create content realising the potential of the earning opportunity and make it their full-time career.”

The rise in technologies such as NFTs, 3D, and AR/VR, in Australia, also prove that Gen Z is working smarter by making sure to be updated on the newest innovations and trends, Stoddart said. Over two-thirds of Australian creators (70%) say the metaverse will bring new job opportunities as it continues to grow.

In August, when The Oz released the inaugural Influence Index, journalist Joanna Panagopoulos revealed many of Australia’s most powerful creators with millions of followers are making up to $10,000 for a single TikTok post.

The top earning creator at TRIBE influencer agency, which specialises in micro-creators, makes parenting content and has made $211,160 since joining in 2018, with just 26,378 Instagram followers.
