New government, new ministry. Prime minister Anthony Albanese has announced who will play which role under his leadership.

From who will take carriage of women's and indigenous issues to health and defence, here's your guide to who has nabbed the top jobs.

Announcing his crew late on Tuesday Albanese said he was leading an “exciting team” that is “overflowing with talent".

"This is the largest number of women who have ever served in an Australian cabinet," he said. 

Albanese said 13 women in the frontbench was a record for a government, declaring he would work towards 50 per cent front bench representation.

The biggest shake-ups to Albanese's team included the appointment of Clare O’Neil as Home Affairs Minister, Andrew Giles as Immigration Minister, Tanya Plibersek as Environment and Water Minister, Jason Clare as Education Minister and Amanda Rishworth as Social Services Minister.

The freshest faces in the ministry include Queensland's Anika Wells, NSW MP Kristy McBain and WA MP Anne Aly.

An interim cabinet of five members were already sworn in last week after Albanese claimed victory at the federal election on May 21.

They included Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles, Treasurer Jim Chalmers, Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Finance Minister Katy Gallagher.

The new ministry will be sworn in at Government House on Wednesday.

It was a big day for Labor. They also found out they will be able to govern in their own right after reaching the 76 seats needed to form a majority. They're expected to pick up the NSW seat of Gilmore, taking them to 77 seats.

Now that his team has been finalised, Albanese will fly to Indonesia on Sunday for a three-day diplomatic visit after visiting Adelaide and Perth over the weekend.
