The streaming giant had once again rolled out the Spotify Wrapped campaign, revealing the most popular songs, artists and podcasts of the year that was.

It’s that time of year again.

The time for Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny to be crowned Global Artist of the Year, for another consecutive year. For die-hard Swifties to beam with pride after being ranked in the top 10% of global Taylor fans. And for hundreds and hundreds of screenshotted data sets to be uploaded boastfully to Instagram stories, only for followers to skim through them without a second thought.

It is, of course, the time Spotify releases its Wrapped campaign: a data reveal for all 465 million of its worldwide users to unpick their audio habits for the year - on a global, national and individual scale.

Pop icon Taylor Swift was unsurprisingly named the most streamed artist by Australians in 2022.

The highly-anticipated release of her album Midnights was an overwhelming success in October, currently closing in on five weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. Canadian rapper Drake was the second most streamed artist among Australians, followed by British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran.

Australians couldn’t get enough of One Direction-star-turned-solo-artist Harry Styles, with the heartthrob claiming the country’s most popular album with Harry’s House and most played song with ‘As It Was’. ‘Heat Waves’ by Glass Animals was Australia’s second most streamed track, then ‘STAY (with Justin Bieber)’ by local First Nations rapper The Kid LAROI. Both Glass Animals' and The Kid LAROI's songs featured among the top five most streamed songs in Australia last year.

The Kid LAROI reigned victorious on this year’s list, as the only Australian artist to crack the global charts after ‘STAY (with Justin Bieber)’, a song published in July 2021, was named the third most streamed song worldwide.

The 19-year-old rising star was also named the most streamed Australian artist of the year, followed by The Wiggles, rap group Hilltop Hoods, country music star Vance Joy and EDM producer Flume.

Puerta Rican rapper Bad Bunny took out the top spot for global artist of the year for the third year in a row. The second most-streamed artist globally – and most streamed female artist of the year – was Swift, followed by Drake, rapper The Weeknd and South Korean boy band BTS.

The Joe Rogan Experience was the most popular podcast of the year among Australians, and was also the most popular among global listeners. The podcast became a Spotify-exclusive in 2020, after the streaming service reportedly paid nearly $300m for sole rights.

Globally, sex and relationship podcast Call Her Daddy was second most popular, and Anything Goes by US influencer Emma Chamberlain was third.

South American sci-fi thriller Caso 63 made the global top five for most-listened-to podcasts, as did true crime favourite Crime Junkie.
