The town of Fitzroy Crossing, 2500km from Perth, is fighting an indigenous alcohol epidemic and working hard to safeguard the future of its children.
At the sports oval after school, optimism is on display as youth organisation Garnduwa runs activities for children aged between six and 16. They play table tennis, skip rope and even planned a school disco.
Youth officer Merrilee Jacky listens to children talk about their triumphs and troubles. If any have not been to school, the youth workers find out why. Jacky says the routine is a simple one.
“We feel, yes, it does benefit our young people,” she says. “(We) aim to divert at-risk young people away from high-risk behaviours.”
