Mark Arbib is the new Australian Olympic chief.

As revealed in The Weekend Australian, Arbib is set to be formally named as the AOC chief executive at a press conference at 11am today.

The former Labor power broker and advisor to James Packer, was voted in by the AOC board. He is replacing outgoing CEO Matt Carroll.

Former Cricket Australia boss Nick Hockley and Commonwealth Games Australia president Ben Houston were linked to the role, as was current Australian Sports Commission boss and Olympic champion Kieran Perkins.

But Arbib had the key backing in former IOC vice-president John Coates, who oversaw his ascension to the AOC executive nine years ago.

Arbib has a strong sports administration resume, holding his post as federal sports minister under prime ministers Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard.
