It is the role of government to prepare the groundwork and stage for the Games. The Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee (Brisbane 2032) will deliver the show.

That is what we have been planning, with the fan and athlete experience at its core.

Our Strategy and Games Plan is set, our brand blueprint and commercial strategy is in place, legacy planning is well under way, and strong, strategic partnerships are secure.

In the next 12-18 months, our Games vision and emblems will be launched, commercial and procurement programs will be under way, our venue master plan and sports program will be aligned and, of course, we’ll be preparing to receive the torch as part of the LA28 Games.

We’re doing our job – and Tuesday’s announcement was another leap forward when it comes to infrastructure momentum.

Generational legacies

The real benefit to what was announced on Tuesday is the generational legacies for not just Queenslanders, but Australians across the nation, that will be realised before and beyond the Games in 2032.

This year, we will celebrate 25 years since we last hosted the Games in Sydney in 2000. Many reading this column would remember the sheer joy and excitement those Games generated – leading to then IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch to heap the highest of praise on our nation, in large part due to our unique and welcoming way of life we extended to the world.

Post the Games in Sydney, there was an uptick in tourism, business, sporting greatness and community benefits.

Global stage

That’s what hosting an Olympic and Paralympic Games brings with it. An accelerator for growth and opportunity. A generational gift. That’s what Brisbane and Queensland has to look forward to.

This infrastructure plan clearly has the best interests of Queenslanders in mind, but it will also deliver a global stage to make our country proud.

In a little over seven years, we will again welcome the world to the greatest show on Earth. And with a determination to get on with the job, I’m confident we will not only deliver a Games that builds on 2000, but sets ourselves up for decades to come.

Building for the future

Sporting and entertainment superstars will be hard-pressed to bypass a world-class stadium in Brisbane, along with a centrally located national aquatics centre and multimillion-dollar upgrade to the Queensland Tennis Centre, including a new show court.

For grassroots clubs and local communities across regions, they too will benefit from building for the future, with the inclusion of multiple indoor venues and upgrades to regional facilities.

Importantly, we won the Games on the premise that the Games fitting the region – and not the other way around – is preserved.

While building will take place in time for the Games, nothing in the plan is being built purely for the Games.

In other words, nothing proposed is just about four weeks of sport, but instead, four plus decades of economic and social prosperity.

This is a bold plan that will not only deliver the critical infrastructure needed for a growing population, but catapult Brisbane and Queensland onto the global stage, where it belongs.
