VRC Derby hero Goldrush Guru all set for Australian Guineas tilt
VRC Derby winner Goldrush Guru has proven his class over 2500m, but a sharper Group 1 challenge over a mile awaits in Saturday’s Australian Guineas.
VRC Derby winner Goldrush Guru has proven his class over 2500m, but a sharper Group 1 challenge over a mile awaits in Saturday’s Australian Guineas at Flemington.
Ahead of a first tilt at the mile, trainer Andrew Gluyas knows he’ll see the best of his star over further, but he won’t be shocked if he’s in the finish in Saturday’s $1m feature.
“On the back of a Derby win, we thought that he deserved a really good opportunity to have a crack at a Group 1 mile,” Gluyas said.
“I’m really happy with him, he came through that CS Hayes run in good fashion, I’m really excited for him racing on Saturday.”

The gun colt was an admirable fourth when second-up in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) last start, sitting on speed and sticking on strongly, beaten four lengths by Sepals.
Derby partner-in-crime Jamie Melham retains the ride this Saturday, with the pair to jump from barrier five.
“I thought it (CS Hayes run) was good, he stuck on quite well, his last little bit was very honest,” he said.
“This race is a natural progression, his best work will come with further.
“A nice draw helps him out and I’m excited for where Jamie can have him in the run – hopefully he’ll be around the mark.”
"That's a big win!"

Saturday’s Group 1 will lay the platform for a trip to Sydney, with Gluyas eyeing the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) next start on March 22.
“I think the feedback that Jamie gave us after the CS Hayes was that it feels like he’s ready for 2000m plus, pretty much straight away,” he said.
“That gives you an indication that perhaps this middle distance might find him wanting at the top level.
“This is probably his first true test at it, I’m going in with an open mind, I’m happy with the horse, it will be interesting to see what happens.
“He’s definitely not there to make the numbers up, that’s for sure.”
Goldrush Guru is a $14 chance with Sportsbet fixed odds. Angel Capital is currently a $4.20 race favourite.
