There is a positive update on injured apprentice jockey Ivy Lam, who is out of intensive care and has been moved into a ward following a race fall at Gawler on Monday.

Lam was flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with a head injury after her mount Jacobs Gate suffered a medical episode, dropping back through the field before collapsing during a race on the eight-event card.

Lam was dislodged in the incident, with her head making contact with the ground.

The remaining race on the card was postponed, and Lam’s condition was considered serious as Racing SA stewards and First Care Medical staff worked to stabilise her condition prior to the arrival of SA ambulance paramedics.

Lam regained consciousness prior to being airlifted, and later again Monday evening when in hospital.

Racing SA chief executive Vaughn Lynch provided an update on Lam’s condition on Tuesday, which was serious but stable, and informed that the apprentice jockey had suffered some bleeding on the brain, and a fractured vertebrae.

A statement by Racing SA on Friday afternoon announced that Lam is making “positive progress” and is out of the intensive care unit.

“Ivy Lam’s family have advised us that she continues to make positive progress and has been moved out of the intensive care unit and onto a ward. She is responsive and her condition is continuing to improve,” the statement said.

“Ivy’s family have asked us to thank the staff at the Royal Adelaide Hospital for their outstanding care and the wider community for the many messages of love and support. They have also asked for continued privacy at this time.”

Lam is indentured to Morphettville trainers Gordon Richards and Damien Moyle.

Lam has ridden 16 winners from 139 rides since beginning her race riding career in January, her latest winner was aboard The Stalker at Balaklava last Wednesday.
