Broadsiding is ready to confirm he is the next “big thing” in Australian racing and provide champion jockey James McDonald with the 100th Group 1 win of his spectacular career.

Mr Brightside can vault above the legendary Makybe Diva into fifth position in the all-time leading prizemoney earners, while Pericles and Makarena are favoured to record career-best wins.

These are just some of the highlights on what is shaping as a compelling day of racing theatre at Caulfield and Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

Caulfield is hosting three Group 1 races including the $3 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on one of the great days of the Melbourne spring carnival.

Perhaps the towering presence of both Broadsiding in the Guineas and Mr Brightside in the Group 1 $1 million Might And Power Stakes (2000m) has prompted connections of some potential rivals to wait for another day.

There are only 11 starters in the Guineas and nine are lining up in the Might And Power – but that won’t take away from either race.

Broadsiding, trained by Godolphin’s James Cummings, is the $1.50 favourite and is set to be the shortest favourite to win the Caulfield Guineas this century. If the Godolphin colt continues his winning streak, then McDonald will be raising the bat for 100 career Group 1 wins and will have reached the milestone faster than any other jockey.

J-Mac in awe of Broadsiding: ‘He hasn’t reached a ceiling yet’

Mr Brightside is at $1.70 to win his eighth Group 1 in the Might And Power Stakes and take his career earnings to over $14.7 million, ranking him fifth on the all-time list and above Makybe Diva on $14.5 million.

The other Group 1 is the $1 million Toorak Handicap (1600m) which has a final field of 12 where another emerging star, Another Wil, is the $2.90 favourite.

Might And Power preview: Mr Brightside all set for final frontier

At Rosehill, Godolphin has Pericles can take his career earnings over the $5 million barrier if he wins the Group 2 Hill Stakes (1900m).

There was a time, not so long ago, when this achievement would have been celebrated but in this era of inflated prizemoney, it’s probably won’t even rate a mention.

To put this into perspective, if Pericles does win the Hill Stakes, he will be the 64th Australian-trained racehorse to break the $5 million prizemoney barrier!

The other Rosehill feature is the $1.5 million Alan Brown Stakes (1400m) where the Team Hawkes-trained Makarena won’t lack for opposition with 16 rivals in a very open race.

BE WARY
The Rosehill rail position is 3m out for most of the course proper after being out 7m for the last meeting here, held earlier this month. When the Rosehill rail is at the 3m position and the track is in the good range, it generally races fairly. Caulfield’s rail is back in the true after being 6m out at the last meeting there on September 21. With the track in the good range, Caulfield should provide every runner with their chance.

ROSEHILL GARDENS

THE BEST BET
BEAR ON THE LOOSE (Race 3 No.6) was having his first start for over two months in a Randwick 1600m event three weeks ago and led most of the way before finishing second to Floating. Bear On The Loose ran a slick 11.4s 200m sectional from the 400m as he tried to break clear of his rivals only to be collared near the line by race-fit Floating when resuming. A Rosehill 1800m winner during winter, Bear On The Loose will be fitter for that recent run and is the one to beat.

THE NEXT BEST
PHARARI (Race 10 No.10) struck trouble in the straight and didn’t really get into the clear until the race was all over when a fast finishing third to Peace Treaty over 1100m two weeks ago. This is a similar grade of race and she is drawn to get an economical run from the inside barrier. Promising mare by American triple crown winner American Pharoah who is building a good race record and has been placed to advantage here.

VALUE BET
BLANC DE BLANC (Race 9 No.9) has produced two excellent efforts in defeat since resuming, chasing home the exciting Briasa and then beating all but Ostraka, both races over the Rosehill 1100m. The Michael Freedman-trained Blanc De Blanc has drawn a little awkwardly but if she gets even luck in running, she will go close in The Nivision. She is at generous odds of $11.

THE WHISPER
GRINGOTTS (Race 8 No.10) was held up for a run in the straight but when finally clear charged home to just miss reeling in McHale in the Bill Ritchie. Despite having an interrupted run, the Ciaron Maher-trained Gringotts was timed to run his final 600m in 33.76s with a final 200m of 11.31s. Gringotts has an impressive strike-rate of seven wins from 14 starts, missing a top three placing only once. Tends to get back in his races and needs luck in running with so many runners in the Alan Brown Stakes but he will be finishing faster than anything else in the race.

CAULFIELD

THE BEST BET
BROADSIDING (Race 8 No.1) is an outstanding colt on a five-race winning streak, three of those at Group 1 level including his fast-finishing effort to win the Golden Rose at Rosehill Gardens. This is his first race going the Melbourne direction since his debut as a two-year-old over 1100m at Ballarat (when a close fourth behind Immortal Star, Evaporate and Altermatum) but he has had practice at James Cummings’ private training complex at Agnes Banks. Super talent and just needs to avoid equine traffic to give jockey James McDonald his 100th career Group 1 win. He’s very short at $1.50 but back him with confidence.

NEXT BEST
JIMMYSSTAR (Race 5 No.7) unleashed a tremendous finishing surge to collar Ashford Street on the line when resuming over 1100m here three weeks ago. Jimmysstar has to jump straight to 1400m at Listed level but he’s a talent, winning six of his 11 starts and he is only going to improve with racing. Jockey Blake Shinn stays on, the horse is unbeaten in two Caulfield starts and has won over the 1400m course so there is a lot to like about Jimmysstar.

VALUE BET
GEAR UP (Race 6 No.4) has shaped promisingly in two runs from a spell including his close third to Positivity in the Naturalism Stakes last start. Gear Up always races well at Caulfield and won the Victoria Gold Cup over 2000m here in autumn. He has to step up to 2400m for the Herbert Power Stakes but he should be peaking after recent racing and is value at $6 in an open race.

THE WHISPER
CITY OF LIGHTS (Race 4 No.14), a half-sister to all-time great mare Winx, and won four of her first eight starts before resuming with a fourth placing behind Terra Mater in the Tibbie Stakes at Newcastle. City Of Lights found the 1400m a touch too short for here that day but was closing her race off nicely. She gets to 1600m here and has James McDonald to guide her. In another very open race, City Of Lights is equal favourite at $5 but is expected to start shorter.
