Jason Day’s return to his homeland has been put on hold after he was forced to withdraw from the World Cup and Australian Open due to ongoing issues with his back.
Day, who was due to partner Adam Scott at the World Cup in Melbourne next month, released a statement this morning confirming he had withdrawn on the advice of his doctors.
The world No.1 has been told to rest for the remainder of this year to ensure he is fit to return next season.
“I regret that I will be unable to come home to Australia this year,” Day said in a statement.
“I was looking forward to playing in the Australian Open and teaming up with Adam Scott on one of my favourite courses Kingston Heath the following week at the World Cup in Melbourne.
“My best wishes to all in Sydney at the Open and to Adam and Team Australia in Melbourne at the World Cup. I appreciate the understanding and patience of my Australian fans.”
His withdrawal is a blow to promoters of the Australian summer and leaves Scott with a decision to make as he weighs up who he will choose to partner him at the World Cup.
Day hasn’t played in Australia for three years, a period in which he has become a major winner and one of the biggest drawcards in the sport.
He has also been forced withdraw from a charity match against former world No.1 Rory McIlroy, which would have been played in the Philippines on November 29 and was designed to raise money for his mother’s homeland.
“I’m quite saddened about missing our trip to the Philippines,” he said
“I was planning on taking my Mum back to her home in the Philippines to visit where we lost members of our family in the typhoon.
“We are to raise much needed funds for these worthy causes brought on by this disaster and I look forward to being there in 2017 to help get this work done.”
