Wanderers coach Marcus Babbel sacked
The A-League club’s German coach Marcus Babbel has been shown the door midway through his second season in charge.
Western Sydney Wanderers have sacked coach Marcus Babbel.
Babbel and his entire staff were called to a crisis meeting early on Monday, with the club losing their patience with the German coach, who has been dismissed halfway through a three-year contract.
In a statement, Wanderers chairman Paul Lederer said: “It is unfortunate that we have needed to take this course of action because we have a great relationship with Markus.
“However we firmly believe that we have a great squad and the results are most definitely not reflective of the ability of the players at this club and certainly do not reflect the aspirations of the Western Sydney Wanderers Football Club.
“We have total faith in the group of players here at the Wanderers and look forward to pushing on with renewed vigour towards the finals series.”
Current assistant Jean Paul de Marigny will take over has interim head coach as the 2014 Asian champions begin their search for a permanent replacement.
The players are absent on a day off in the wake of Sunday night’s 1-0 defeat to Perth.
The club was expected to delay any action until chairman Paul Lederer returned from overseas, but the backlash following the loss to the Glory appears to have forced their hand.
The Wanderers are sitting third from bottom in the A-League, with just four wins from 14 games.
