2024 UCI Track Nations Cup: Adelaide to host Paris Olympics qualifying event
Adelaide is set to play host to the world’s best track cyclists in one of the final qualification events before next year’s Paris Olympic Games.
Adelaide will host the world’s best track cyclists in one of the final qualification events before next year’s Paris Olympic Games.
The opening round of the 2024 UCI Track Nations Cup will come to Adelaide’s Super-Drome from February 2 to 4.
One of only three Track Nations Cup staged each year, it will be one of the final qualification events prior to the Olympics in Paris in July and August and means the best track cyclists in the world will descend on Adelaide for the final stages of their preparations for the Games.
Local stars in action will include gun sprinters Matt Richardson and Matt Glaetzer and pursuit queen Alexandra Manly as they compete across all six Olympic events.
South Australian sports minister Katrine Hildyard said off the back of the Tour Down Under in January it further confirmed the state’s reputation as the home of cycling in Australia.
“Adelaide has been the home of the national track cycling team since the 1980s, this
exciting event, just months before cyclists head to the Olympics, is another way we
are backing in our strong, long-running relationship with cycling in Australia,” she said.
AusCycling chief executive Marne Fechner said hosting a Track Nations Cup event could be huge for Australia’s chances of success on the track in Paris.
“This home ground advantage and familiarity will hopefully give our Australian riders the boost of confidence they need in the final months before Paris 2024,” she said.
The event was secured through the SA Government’s $40 million major events bid fund, and chair of the Major Events Attraction Committee Leon Bignell said it would be a great chance for South Australians to farewell the Australian cycling team before they head to the Olympics.
“For any South Australian who will be tuning into Paris24 make sure you get out to the Super-Drome and feel the atmosphere and see these international superstars in action at the end of January,” he said.
