AFL 2023: Stuart Dew joins Australian cricket team a week after being sacked by Gold Coast

Just days after he was sacked by Gold Coast, Stuart Dew has popped up on the other side of the world – so what is he doing with the Australian cricket team?

Sacked Gold Coast AFL coach Stuart Dew joined the Australian cricket team during their training session at Old Trafford on Monday, two days out from the fourth Test in Manchester.

Dew, who arrived with the Australian contingent as they reached the venue, is on holidays with his father in the United Kingdom after he was sacked from Gold Coast last week.

He is expected to be replaced by Richmond premiership coach Damien Hardwick.

Dew will spend more time with the Australian cricket team over the next few days as the Aussies prepare to take on England in the fourth test at Old Trafford.

Dew is friends with gun Australian No.5 batsman Travis Head.

The pair discussed the idea of Dew joining the Australian team in an informal manner as part of the holiday.

The former Gold Coast coach was keen to get out of Australia in the wake of his sacking to avoid the media coverage and fallout from the Suns’ decision.

He was axed with one year remaining on his contract.

The Australian cricket team was glad to invite Dew into the team environment as a six-year coach of the Suns.

Geelong champion Joel Selwood and Australian F1 driver Oscar Piastri, from McLaren, also spent time with the Aussies on their Ashes tour.

Rival AFL clubs are soon expected to reach out to Dew about joining them as an assistant for next season.

He would be a stellar pick-up for a club such as Hawthorn, where Dew helped lead the club to an upset premiership win over Geelong in 2008.

But it is too soon for Dew to begin those conversations about next year as he looks to take a break from footy.

He is expected to be replaced by Richmond premiership coach Damien Hardwick.
