AFL Round 13 teams: Latest line-ups and team news for every match
David Noble has axed another of North Melbourne’s promising youngsters after running out of patience with his team’s flagging fortunes. See the full teams for North’s clash with the Giants.
David Noble has made another statement at selection, dumping out-of-form Roo Tarryn Thomas.
Thomas was tipped to be one of the breakout stars of 2022 but his output has dropped sharply, recording 14 disposals (down from 18.2) and 2.9 marks (down from 4.6).
The 22-year-old’s ranking points have also plummetted from 84 points a game last season to just 58.
Thomas and Atu Bosenavulagi were dropped among three changes for Sunday’s game against GWS, with Aaron Hall back from injury and Jaidyn Stephenson given another chance.
The Giants have included Adam Kennedy and Lachie Whitfield, with Jarrod Brander, Xavier O’Halloran and Bobby Hill dropping out from their Round 11 side.
Meanwhile, Essendon star Jake Stringer will headline trio of inclusions for the Bombers for Friday night’s big clash against Carlton at the MCG, but the club will give midfielder Andrew McGrath until match day to prove his fitness.
Ahead of the club’s 150 year anniversary match, Bombers coach Ben Rutten confirmed Stringer would return from a hamstring injury for his first match since Round 7.
The 2-9 Bombers will also welcome back Matt Guelfi (hamstring) and Mason Redman (suspension) for the pivotal clash.
Forwards Alec Waterman and Tex Wanganeen were omitted, while Devon Smith will miss with injury.
But Rutten said the Bombers would not make a final call on McGrath’s fitness until game day after he tweaked his groin at training last weekend.
“We’re not sure yet (about McGrath). We’ll wait on that and make a final call on that,” Rutten said after the Bombers’ captain’s run at Windy Hill.
“He just had a bit of a hiccup last Saturday at training so we will give him every chance.
“He just needs to be confident that he is fit and ready to perform.
“We’ll make the right decision on that tomorrow.”
Rutten was confident Stringer, the club’s leading goalkicker last year, was ready to perform after building up his training in the past two weeks.
“The week off came at a good time for us to be able to get some continuity in his training the last two and half weeks now,” Rutten said.
“He’s in good condition, well prepared and ready to go.”
Blues big man returns
Carlton key forward Harry McKay will return against Essendon on Friday night in major boost for the Blues.
McKay moved freely at Carlton’s captains run on Thursday morning, with coach Michael Voss saying he had ticked all the boxes to make an early return from a knee injury.
Defender Caleb Marchbank will return for his first AFL game since 2019, while Jack Martin and Matt Kennedy are back from injury.
The Blues omitted young quartet Liam Stocker, Matt Cottrell, Jesse Motlop and Paddy Dow for the clash.
“He’s just got to get through today’s training session,” Voss said.
“Given it’s a pretty light one, we expect him to be okay. He’s been fairly uninterrupted with his preparation. He’s an absolute pro, so that’s given him the best chance to be able to get out there. So we expect him to play.
“He came off the operation quite well. So that’s always a great start. And he was able to get his rehab pretty quickly. So he’s probably a week ahead, maybe two ahead of where he should be. But I think if you ask Harry, he always had an eye on this one.”
Mid-season draftees Sam Durdin and Will Hayes are set to feature for Carlton’s VFL team at Windy Hill on Saturday.
Tigers cut cult hero as Port ruckman axed
Richmond will blood a debutant for its highly anticipated clash Port Adelaide tomorrow night while reigning Coleman Medallist Harry McKay is edging closer to a return from a knee injury.
Youngster Judson Clarke will come in for the Tigers after impressive form in the VFL.
The 18-year-old was taken with pick 30 last year and has been playing as a midfielder/ forward in the Tigers VFL team.

It comes as McKay pushes to come back potentially as early as Friday night’s clash with Essendon at the MCG.
McKay would need to get through the Blues’ main training session to prove his fitness this week. But the club will give him every chance to make a shock return to tackle the Bombers.
If he falls short, he is almost certain to return against Richmond on Thursday week. McKay hasn’t played since suffering a lateral meniscus tear in his knee in the Round 8 win over Adelaide.
He was expected to miss at least six weeks of football when he suffered the injury, but looks set to return before that time frame.
The 24-year-old, who has teamed perfectly with Charlie Curnow this year, has missed three games (Greater Western Sydney, Sydney and Collingwood), but has worked hard on his rehabilitation in an effort to fast-track his return.
He started running again during the bye round last week and stepped up his work rate this week.
His imminent return would be a huge boost for the Blues after a challenging past few weeks with injury.
McKay (20) and Curnow (37) have combined for 57 goals so far this season, with the Blues’ double-pronged key position attack testing the defence of rival clubs.
McKay was one of the first to congratulate Caleb Marchbank, who will play his first AFL match in more than 1000 days on Friday night.
Marchbank has endured a number of injuries in recent years, but coach Michael Voss announced his AFL return to the playing group on Tuesday night.
He will help the Blues in defence in the absence of the injured Jacob Weitering.
WEITERING SETS RETURN DATE TARGET
Jasper Bruce
Carlton key defender Jacob Weitering is aiming to return from his shoulder injury against St Kilda in round 16 but says it’s possible he won’t be back until a week after that.
Vice-captain Weitering was subbed out in the first quarter of Carlton’s last game before the bye, a loss to bitter rivals Collingwood, after suffering a shoulder injury.
Scans confirmed he would have the same surgery that is keeping St Kilda superstar Jack Steele on the sidelines.
Carlton had been expecting Weitering to miss about six weeks of footy, but the former No. 1 draft pick on Wednesday revealed he was aiming to return a little earlier if possible.
“We did say six weeks post-surgery, which I think takes us to the West Coast game in Perth (in round 17),” he told SEN.
“We’ve actually got St Kilda leading into West Coast so that’s four and then five weeks post, so that’s the aim.
“(But West Coast) is probably the game that’s most realistic.”
Weitering said his focus was on remaining upbeat.
“For me, I’ve just got to remain as positive as I can and make sure I rehab this as well as I can,” he said.
