Year 12 student Isabel De Jager, from the NSW mid-north coast, came to PLC Sydney as a boarder for her final two years of schooling. Following in the footsteps of her older sister and grandmother, Isabel grabbed the opportunity to access a quality education in a nurturing environment.

Isabel has particularly enjoyed the camaraderie and diversity of backgrounds among the girls and the mutual support within the boarding house.

“I love the companionship of so many ‘sisters’,” she says. “It’s so great knowing that I have a whole house of girls who will rally around me no matter what.”

Isabel said that the boarding experience had helped her become more independent and self-reliant.

“Ms Turner (director of boarding) has played a big role in helping me to feel better about any challenges that I have faced,” Isabel says. “She always knows what to say and how to help you, no matter if it’s stress over exams or the fact that you’re missing home.”

Ms Turner says Isabel has become a wonderful role model for the other students. “Isabel was elected to take on the role of boarding prefect after only six months, demonstrating her capacity to manage daily routines, hone her leadership skills and pass on her learnings to the younger girls.”

Now in her final year of high school, Isabel is very focused on her studies. However, she says she “still loves playing an active role in the boarding house, hanging out with all of the girls, playing games and going on different activities during the weekends”.

“I really enjoy living with my ‘sisters’ and participating in school and boarding house activities,” Isabel says. “I have built many lasting friendships and feel a real sense of belonging here.”
