Diversity, inclusion at our heart
At Toorak College, individuality is not just acknowledged but woven into the school’s ethos, fostering an environment where everyone feels welcomed and valued.
Diversity and inclusion are fundamental principles shaping our society and are essential in both school and work environments.
Schools play a pivotal role in instilling these values, preparing students to thrive in a diverse global community.
At Toorak College, individuality is not just acknowledged but woven into the school’s ethos, fostering an environment where everyone feels welcomed and valued.
A hallmark of Toorak College is our ability to bring together students from around the world through our boarding house. This commitment to boarding enriches our school with linguistic and cultural diversity.
Studies show that people in diverse environments experience a stronger sense of commonality (Suttie, 2021). While not every environment can represent cultural diversity, learning about other cultures, traditions and celebrations can build appreciation and reduce stereotypes.
We instil a commitment to lifelong learning. By fostering global awareness, students develop a deep understanding and acceptance of diversity. Resources such as Be You Beyond Blue highlight that discussions on moral issues and exposure to diverse perspectives enable children to cultivate awareness and understanding.
Creating a safe environment, where students feel empowered to voice their opinions, is integral to upholding our obligations under the ChildSafe Standards. We pay particular attention to the diverse needs of vulnerable students, including those with disabilities, from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, unable to live at home, international students and LGBTIQA+ students.
By celebrating differences and fostering a culture where everyone feels valued, we enrich the educational experience and pave the way for a more inclusive society.
