All aboard for a family affair as sisters share a unique experience
Boarding at Caulfield Grammar School has opened many doors for three high-achieving sisters.
New friends and exciting opportunities are on the agenda for Year 11 Caulfield Grammar School student Maeve Sheldrick. Maeve grew up on a farm near Swan Hill and recently joined the boarding community at Caulfield Grammar School.
In doing so, Maeve is following in the footsteps of her sisters: Scarlett, now a first-year occupational therapy student at the Australian Catholic University, and Greta, who is in her final year of nutrition science at Monash University, both in Melbourne.
“I saw how many opportunities my sisters had at Caulfield, so I was keen to experience them myself,” Maeve says. “The teachers are very welcoming, supportive and understanding of the struggles of a new boarder.”
The school offers more than 40 subjects for the VCE, more than 30 music and drama ensembles, and more than 30 sporting options as well as a host of specialist clubs and tours.
Among the opportunities offered, Maeve is excited to play netball and take up touch football. She has her sights set on health sciences, possibly physiotherapy, as her career.
“I like the structure of regular prep time every evening,” she says. “I also appreciate that there are tutors available after school to provide help when we need it.”
This is a sentiment Maeve’s sisters, Scarlett and Greta, echo. They also appreciated the dedicated homework time set aside each evening during their final two years. “I think it helped me establish a good routine for my university studies,” Greta says.
Scarlett, who is living at University College in Carlton, thinks the boarding experience was great preparation for college life. “I was well prepared for meeting new people.”
The Sheldrick sisters also appreciate the school’s flexibility with approved passes, which allows Maeve to visit her sisters and helps maintain a close connection.
