Australia’s vaccine supply received a major boost overnight with the Therapeutic Goods Administration approving the release of locally made AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines for use in GP clinics and state vaccination hubs.

The TGA had been carrying out batch testing on local AstraZeneca doses since it granted provisional approval for the vaccine on Sunday.

The medicines regulator has now authorised the release of 832,000 doses of locally made AstraZeneca vaccine, labelling it safe and effective.

“TGA testing of the vaccine batches in our Canberra laboratories plus review of extensive manufacturing documentation, has ensured that the locally manufactured vaccine has the exactly the same composition and performance as the overseas-manufactured vaccine, the same quality, and is free of contaminants,” the TGA said.

The Australian company CSL has been contracted to locally manufacture 50 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine.

Locally manufactured doses will now be dispatched to about 1100 GP clinics who are initially administering the vaccine.
