Sophie's brain injury

JUST six months after enduring her second horrific accident, Sophie Delezio has been diagnosed with a serious brain injury.

Doctors treating the five-year-old burns victim believe she has bleeding on the brain, which could lead to further complications as she grows older.

Sophie was left with near-fatal injuries when she was hit by a car in May this year while being pushed in a stroller across a pedestrian crossing at Seaforth, in Sydney's northern beaches.

In December 2003, an out-of-control car drove into a childcare centre in nearby Fairlight, leaving Sophie with burns to 85 per cent of her body. She lost some of her fingers and her feet.

Sophie's father Ron Delezio has told New Idea magazine of his daughter's latest setback, despite her being well enough to return to kindergarten in July this year.

"Sophie is less attentive than before the accident, she gets tired more easily and she has lost weight, muscle tone and mobility, but the brain injury is what really worries us," he said.
