Man drowns after becoming caught in rip on NSW south coast

A man could not be revived after he and another man were pulled from the surf by brave bystanders.

A man has drowned after he was caught in a rip at a popular beach on NSW’s South Coast on Boxing Day.

Emergency services were called to South Bombo Beach at Kiama shortly before 5pm on Thursday, after reports members of the public were performing CPR on a man who had been pulled from the water.

Police assisted in the CPR until NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived.

Tragically, the 52-year-old man could not be revived and died at the scene.

Police were told the man was swimming in the surf with an 18-year-old male relative when they became caught in a rip.

Several members of the public rushed into the surf and managed to remove the pair from the water.

The 18-year-old man was uninjured.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

It comes after a woman drowned in a separate incident at an unpatrolled section at Werri Beach at Gerringong on Saturday.
