The mercury is set to reach more than 40 degrees in parts of South Australia this weekend, but the worst is yet to come.

Port Pirie will swelter through a top of 41C on Saturday, while Adelaide will reach a top of 36C.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast “elevated temperatures” of more than 40 degrees in several parts of the state over the coming week.

The worst of the heat is set to hit South Australia next Friday, with Port Augusta predicted to reach a stifling 45C.

Adelaide has an expected top of 38C.

The rising temperatures follow BOM’s announcement of small areas of a “severe heatwave” around the Cape York Peninsula, the Top End and inland NSW on Friday and Saturday.

Meteorologist Tom Boeck said South Australia’s temperatures were elevated but did not meet the criteria for a heatwave.

While Adelaide’s maximums were not unusual for this time of year he said the conditions were still “very hot”.

Mr Boeck said temperatures would cool on Sunday ahead of even warmer weather at the end of next week.

Some thunderstorms are also forecast across the state over the weekend.
