Man dies after being tasered by WA police

An investigation has been ordered after a man suffered a fatal medical episode just minutes after he was tasered by police.

A man who was tasered by police in Perth has died after suffering an apparent medical episode.

Police were called to a property on Priestley St in Embelton about 12.30am on Friday following reports a man had entered a house occupied by people he did not know and smashed multiple windows.

“Police attended the residence and located the man in the rear of the garden of the property,” a police statement read.

“Officers attempted to negotiate with the man, but he continued to behave in an aggressive manner.

“A taser was deployed by an officer and the man was restrained, and he appeared to suffer a medical episode.”

Police said the man appeared to have a medical episode.

The West Australian reported the man was not conscious or breathing when paramedics were called to the home about 1.20am, and upon his arrival to hospital about 2.20am attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

WA Police Assistant Commissioner Martin Haime said an investigation would be conducted by officers from the internal investigations unit because the man had been in police custody prior to his death.

Police reported that officers administered first aid to the man and performed CPR until the arrival of St John WA.

Paramedics transported him to Royal Perth Hospital.

Mr Haime extended police thoughts to the man’s family and loved ones, praising first responders for their rapid response before requesting patience while the investigation was still in its early stages.

A report will also be prepared for the coroner.
