Liberal senator Jim Molan has demanded an apology from Labor senator Doug Cameron following a fiery exchange in a Senate committee hearing yesterday during which the retired major-general was derided by his counterpart for his “flag-wrapping nonsense”.

Senator Molan accused Senator Cameron of repeatedly mocking the military during the tense hearing, after the Labor MP objected to the Liberal’s ongoing interjections during a debate on the underpayment of Tasmania’s lowest-paid workers.

“Mate, you’re not a general anymore, and I’m not a private in your army,” Senator Cameron said, motioning for Senator Molan to sit down.

Senator Molan replied: “On a number of occasions today, senator, you have run that line against me. I don’t care what you say about me ... you are insulting everyone who has worn the uniform of this country over many many years.”

When the former military chief asked Senator Cameron to apologise for his “disrespectful” remarks, Senator Cameron said: “Don’t give me that flag-wrapping nonsense.”

Both senators later posted separate clips of the exchange on their respective Facebook pages, with Senator Cameron labelling his clip with the caption: “I’m trying to get to the bottom of workers being ripped off, and Liberal Senator Jim Molan keeps running interference on behalf of big business. He needs to pipe down.”

Senator Molan asked his Facebook followers if they thought Senator Cameron should apologise.

Neither senator could not be reached for comment last night.
