Former Test cricketer Michael Slater has been charged by police with using a carriage service to menace, harass, or cause offence and also contravening an apprehended violence order following his arrest last week.

The 52-year-old faced a magistrate at Manly Local Court in Sydney on Wednesday afternoon after being released from hospital, where he was once again granted bail to attend a residential rehabilitation facility.

The charges stem from an incident on Thursday night when multiple triple-0 calls were made by a woman at a home on Sydney’s northern beaches.

Following his arrest, he was taken to a northern beaches police station before he was then transported to hospital for a mental health assessment.

On Wednesday, Slater – who is facing multiple assault, stalking and intimidation and breaching bail charges – was released from hospital and taken into the custody of police, where he was charged.

Magistrate Robyn Denes granted Slater bail, with the former player and television commentator facing his strictest bail conditions yet.

He is prohibited from leaving the clinic, possessing or using a mobile phone and banned from contacting – directly or indirectly – his alleged victims.

He must also follow any directions and rules of the clinic and his doctor or mental health practitioner.

According to court documents obtained by The Australian, police made a detention application on the grounds he had allegedly breached previous a bail condition of not contacting witnesses and a drug and alcohol restriction.

Slater is excused from attending court on the next occasion his matter is heard if he is legally represented and still residing at the rehabilitation facility.

Last Thursday, police applied for an interim apprehended violence order to protect the 53-year-old beauty therapist he was with at the time of his arrest.

According to court documents, Slater is prohibited from assaulting, threatening, stalking, harassing or intimidating the woman and cannot approach her or be in her company for at least 12 hours after drinking or taking illicit drugs. He is also prohibited from going within 100m of where she lives or works.

In a statement, police said they were called to a house in Freshwater on Thursday last week following reports of a “disturbance”.

In April, domestic violence charges were dismissed on mental health grounds and he was ordered to undergo a year-long mental health treatment plan.

He is also on bail after allegedly assaulting a 35-year-old woman that same month. It is also alleged he assaulted and intimidated a man at a hospital. He is defending the charges.
