Three journalists from The Australian were winners at the Kennedy Awards for Excellence in Journalism in Sydney on Friday night.

Four-time winner Trent Dalton was honoured with the Jim Oram Award for Outstanding Feature Writing, while Natasha Robinson was awarded the Outstanding Consumer Affairs Reporting Award.

Dalton writes for The Weekend Australian and is a two-time Walkley Award winner, as well as four-time winner of the national News Awards Features Journalist of the Year. Robinson, who began her career at The Australian in 2004, is now the publication’s health editor and a Walkley Awards finalist.

John Borthwick, a long-term contributor to The Weekend Australian’s travel section, received the Outstanding Travel Writing Award for a feature about Greenland.

The Kennedys were established in 2012 as NSW-based awards in honour of the late crime journalist Les Kennedy. News Corp featured strongly throughout, with its newspapers, Sky News, photographers and online news taking out nine awards, as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award, which went to former News Ltd chairman and chief executive John Hartigan.

Following the 2015 ceremony, the board dropped “NSW” from the title to reflect the entries received, and “in keeping with the foundation’s mission to be as inclusive as possible in promoting excellence”, Kennedy Foundation chairman Rocco Fazzari said. “We deliberately set out to encourage the best of the best, regardless of their postcode, to enter,” Mr Fazzari said.
