The son of a woman shot dead in a drive-by shooting in Sydney’s southwest has been arrested.

Kim Duncan, aged 65, died when three men jumped out of a black sedan and fired a flurry of shots into her family home in Ambarvale in Sydney about 11pm on Monday. Duncan was shot in the leg and died of her injuries at the scene.

About 8am on Wednesday, officers from Campbelltown Police Area Command and Strike Force Raptor arrested two men during a vehicle stop on Copperfield Drive, Ambarvale.

Both men – aged 32 and 34 – were taken to Campbelltown Police Station “where they are assisting with inquiries”.

One of the men arrested was reportedly Duncan’s son, James “Jaydee” Shaine Dowd.

Mr Dowd was in the house at the time of the shooting along with a 21-year-old woman.

A neighbour told Seven’s Sunrise program that “the son was in the backyard screaming out that his mum’s just been shot, so he was pretty terrified and, yeah, looks lost”.

Neither of the men have been charged in relation to the shooting and The Australian does not suggest Mr Dowd was involved.

Detective Superintendent Grant Healey told the media on Tuesday the family had only lived at the Dickens Rd house, which now had bullet holes scattered across its front, for six to eight weeks.

“It’s abhorrent, somebody coming up to a house and putting shots off is totally reckless and the consequences are catastrophic. You have a 65-year-old grandmother that’s been shot in the leg by people that walked up and shot at a house,” he said.

“Last night they were very, very upset and they’re very, very upset this morning. Some members of the family are speaking to us and helping us out. But it’s tragic your mother and grandmother has been shot by cowards that stood out the front of the house.”
