Mother killed in drive-by shooting in southwest Sydney while others inside
A witness said he heard someone run out into the backyard screaming ‘mum’s just been shot’.
A grandmother has been killed in a drive-by shooting in Sydney’s southwest overnight after she was struck in the leg.
About 11pm, three people pulled up to the family home in Ambarvale in Sydney’s southwest, NSW Police said. They jumped out of the black sedan, fired a flurry of shots at the home, and quickly left the scene.
When officers arrived, they discovered a 65 year-old woman had a gunshot wound in her leg.
“She was treated by police and NSW Ambulance paramedics, however she died at the scene,” a statement by NSW Police said.
A 34-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman were also in the home at the time. However, they were uninjured.
The family had only lived at the Dickens Rd house for six to eight weeks, which now had bullet holes scattered across its front.
“When we first come out, the son was in the backyard screaming out that his mum’s just been shot, so he was pretty terrified and, yeah, looks lost,” neighbour Shaun Burridge told the Seven’s Sunrise program.
Detective Superintendent Grant Healey, commander of the Campbelltown City Police Area Command, called it “abhorrent”.
“It’s abhorrent, somebody coming up to a house and putting shots off is totally reckless and the consequences are catastrophic. You have a 65 year-old grandmother that’s been shot in the leg by people that walked up and shot at a house,” he said.
“Last night they were very very upset and they’re very very upset this morning. Some members of the family are speaking to us and helping us out. But it’s tragic your mother and grandmother has been shot by cowards that stood out the front of the house.”
Police said they had not been able to find the black Sedan or any of the weapons used.
Detective Superintendent Healey said police hadn’t been able to interview the family properly yet.
