THE nation's volunteers, and those who assisted with the Queensland flood recovery, have been singled out for praise in the end-of-year messages from Australia's political leaders.

Wayne Swan said the nation would be well prepared for any weather-related emergencies over the holiday period, after last summer's natural disasters.

The Acting Prime Minister said yesterday if this year proved anything, it was that Australians had a strong community spirit. "Plenty of lessons have been learned from last summer," he said in his final economic note for the year. "Authorities in all states are working hard to make sure our communities are well prepared for the worst nature can throw at us."

Mr Swan said Australians had responded generously to those events to help those in need.

"It's a great reminder as we head into Christmas and enjoy time with our families to spare a thought for those less fortunate."

Tony Abbott praised the nation's volunteers and members of Australia's military in his Christmas message.

"This Christmas, I'd like to especially thank our nation's volunteers," the Opposition Leader said. "To all the lifesavers, emergency services workers, Meals on Wheels helpers, refuge workers, everyone associated with our great charities: you make our country a better place. You make Christmas a better time. You are an inspiration to everyone.

"We should also remember everyone serving our country abroad. You are in our thoughts."
