Labor’s national executive will remain evenly split between Right and Left factions, with 10 seats each, and Anthony Albanese maintaining his ex-officio casting vote as party leader.

Following a ballot of 399 delegates, those elected to the national executive from the Left faction included CFMEU national secretary Zach Smith, UWU Queensland official Gary Bullock and CPSU national secretary Melissa Donnelly, along with senators Tim Ayres and Linda White.

Those from the Right faction included SDA national secretary Gerard Dwyer, HSU NSW secretary and national president Gerard Hayes, USU secretary Graeme Kelly, and also senator Raff Ciccone and MP Sam Rae.

Sources said some groups collected ballot papers that were filled out centrally to ensure strict ticket voting was followed. Others suggested there were defections from both factions.

There were initially 33 nominations for 20 positions, including Industrial Left candidates Peter Marshall (UFU national secretary) and Rita Mallia (CFMEU NSW president), who did not reach a quota.

Several candidates withdrew before the ballot.
