Coronavirus: Government commits $10m to help young people out of nursing homes
The Morrison government commits $10m to supporting people under 65 living in nursing homes to find alternative accommodation.
More than $10m in new funding will be spent by the government to reduce the number of young people living in nursing homes.
Tuesday’s federal budget will fund a network of 40 co-ordinators to find accommodation and support in the community for the almost 5000 people under 65 living in residential aged care.
On Wednesday National Disability Insurance Scheme Minister Stuart Robert and Aged Care Minister Richard Colbeck will announce the measure, saying the government was committed under its Younger People in Residential Aged Care Strategy to ensure no younger person needed to live in aged care.
The strategy, launched in May 2019, was updated late last year to factor in the aged-care royal commission’s recommended targets after it had been described as unambitious.
It now commits to ensure that apart from exceptional circumstances there are no people under the age of 65 entering residential aged care by 2022.
