A pilot was killed in a light-plane crash in rural Queensland on Sunday morning.

The Queensland Police Service confirmed a 67-year-old Townsville man was the sole occupant of the aircraft that crashed into bushland and was found dead at the scene close to Bahr Rd.

Authorities launched a search for the plane at 9.30am after it failed to arrive at its destination in Ayr, a rural town in northeast Queensland. The plane was found in Shirbourne, more than 30km west of Ayr, during an aerial search.

Emergency services had to hike to the scene, which is only accessible by foot because of steep terrain and thick bushland.

The forensic crash unit was investigating the circumstances of the crash on Sunday night, with a report to be prepared for the Coroner.
