A prison inmate has been charged with the murder of gangland figure Bilal Hamze, shot dead as he emerged from an up-market Japanese restaurant in Sydney’s CBD last year.

The underworld boss was allegedly shot by a person in a black Audi after leaving Kid Kyoto restaurant on Bridge St on 17 June 2021.

The 34-year-old was rushed to St Vincents Hospital, but died shortly afterwards.

The Audi was discovered burnt out on Sydney’s north shore, with police forming strike force Englorie to investigate the murder.

On Tuesday morning Samuel John Rokomaqisa was arrested at Silverwater Correctional Centre by state homicide squad detectives. Shortly afterwards he was charged with murder.

“Following extensive inquiries and public appeals for information, investigators attended a correctional facility in Silverwater and arrested a 32-year-old man,” police said in a statement.

“Investigations under Strike Force Englorie continue.”

Rokomaqisa is currently before the courts and on remand after he was arrested and charged last year in relation to a separate matter.

He will face a magistrate at Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday afternoon.
