Coronavirus: Vasco da Gama passengers in dark on release from quarantine

More than 700 interstate passengers from the Vasco da Gama have not been told when their isolation ends.

More than 700 interstate passengers who were taken off the cruise ship Vasco da Gama and put in “luxury” Perth hotels say they have not been told when their isolation ends, which authority is responsible for them, or how they can book flights home.

Brisbane resident Paul Bailey, who has spent a week in forced isolation in Crown Casino’s Metropol hotel, said the only numbers to call on documentation they received were a 000 number and another to ring for help giving up cigarettes, as smoking was banned.

“We’ve never been given a number to call, or told when our quarantine is over,” he said. “There have been no checks on us.”

He said some people had been told by police when disembarking that their quarantine period would end on April 10, while others believed it was April 13.

“We’re all wondering how the hell we are going to get back to the eastern states if we can’t get a firm date and book flights,” he said.

No passenger may leave their rooms, which have sealed windows and no balconies.

He said if they try to open their hotel door for air, a security guard tells them to close it.

They can order Uber Eats and supermarket items, which are checked by the guards to ensure there is no alcohol.
